Five people were injured when two groups of the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) came to blows over distribution of cheques to the poor at Sehna Khera village in the Lambi assembly segment, the home constituency of chief minister Parkash Singh Badal, in Muktsar district on Thursday.
The injured have been identified as Sukhraj Singh, Parkash Singh, Avtar Singh, Vicky and Baldev Singh, who have been admitted to the Lambi hospital.
The clash took place after a group raised questions over the distribution of cheques for welfare schemes at the village gurdwara. The CM’s officer on special duty Balkaran Singh was also present during the clash.
Police said the groups led by Kuldeep Singh, husband of village sarpanch, and former sarpanch Jaswant Singh, had heated arguments during the cheque-distribution function. Both the factions started hurling abuses and attacked each other with bricks, stones and chairs.
Kuldeep alleged that members of the Jaswant group passed derogatory comments and when they were asked to leave the venue, they started attacking them.
The other group alleged that Kuldeep’s supporters started abusing them when they objected to the village sarpanch keeping cheques of some beneficiaries.
Lambi station house officer Gurpreet Singh said the situation was under control. “A case will be registered after recording statements of the injured,” he said.
