Five persons were killed and one injured after they were hit and dragged by a Toyota Innova near Khanpur village on the Jalandhar-Pathankot highway on Friday.
The driver of the Pathankot-bound SUV (PB 10 DS 0096) reportedly lost control while overtaking another vehicle and ran into the victims who were sitting in chairs on roadside. Four persons died on the spot while one of the injured succumbed to injuries in a private hospital in Jalandhar.
They deceased were identified as Karnail Singh, Gandharv Singh and Ram Saran of Latifpur, Jatinder Kumar of Khanpur and Darshan Singh of Hajipur. Injured Balwant Singh of Lohgarh village has been shifted to Amritsar. All victims were in their fifties.
The accident took place around 1.30 pm when a religious function was going on in Latifpur village a few metres away. Mukerian police reached the spot and took the injured to the civil hospital. The driver was arrested and the vehicle impounded.
Mukerian station house officer (SHO) Jaswinder Pal Singh said the driver and other occupants of the SUV were unhurt in the accident. He revealed that a case had been registered against the driver. Locals informed that groups of devotees of the nearby temple often sat at the ill-fated site under the tree.
