The city police have arrested five members of a seven-member gang and seized arms and ammunition from them. The accused were nabbed from a park near the Focal Point, Mehta road, where, according to the cops, they were planning to commit a robbery, during a raid conducted by the police. Of the seven people, two managed to flee after giving the police a slip.
The police have seized three .32 bore revolvers, eleven rounds, two bore shells, two 303 bore pistols, four rounds 303 bore and 50 grams heroin from the accused.
The arrested have been identified as Amandeep Singh, a resident of Tarn Taran; Ajaypal Singh, a resident of Jawahar Nagar; Kulwinder Singh alias Lamba, a resident of Saidpur village; Ranjit Singh Rana, a resident of Tarn Taran; and Jagpreet Singh Jagga, also a resident of Tarn Taran. The two, who managed to abscond, have been identified as Malkit Singh alias Tirath, a resident of Chananke village, and Saba, a resident of Mehta Chowk area.
Amritsar police commissioner Jatinder Singh Aulakh said that the police had received information that the accused had assembled in a park in the Focal Point, where they were planning to commit a major robbery. “The police had also got information that the accused provided shelter to gangster Jagdeep Singh alias Jaggu of Bhagwanpur, who is a proclaimed offender and extorted money from people for him,” he said.
The police said one of the accused Ajay of Maqboolpura, and two of his accomplices Malkit Singh alias Tirath, and Saba, of Mehta Chowk, who managed to escape, had injured two people by firing at them on Diwali.
