A 57-year-old woman was found murdered at her home in old Madhopuri area in division number 3 on Monday.
The woman has been identified as Amarjit Kaur, a widow, who had been staying alone on the ground floor after her husband’s death a few years ago. The body was first discovered by her son, Simarjit Singh, who lives on the first floor of the house.
Simarjit told the police that he went inside after finding that the main door of the house open and found his mother’s body lying near the kitchen area.
Police said the woman’s body was found strangulated with a piece of rope near the kitchen area of her house. While one end of the rope was tied with the handle of the door, the other was tied with the neck of the woman after killing her.
The woman’s son told the police that he used to live on the first floor with his family and rooms on the second floor of the house were given on rent to migrant labourers.
Sanjeev Kapoor, station house officer (SHO) of division number 3 police station, said that an FIR has been registered on the statement of Gagandeep Kaur, daughter of the deceased, who lives in Sanjay Gandhi Colony with her husband.
Kapoor said that questioning from family has revealed that the woman had no rivalry or dispute with anyone. The SHO said that all tenants living on the second floor are also being questioned.
The police have registered an FIR under section 302 (murder) against unidentified persons and launched a manhunt.
