A helicopter arranged by the state government on Monday airlifted 59 persons from the tribal Lahaul-Spiti district.

Inclement weather conditions had hampered helicopter services to the district for the past many days. The only road connecting Kullu to Lahaul-Spiti remains closed for about five months due to snow at Rohtang Pass.

The helicopter was scheduled to airlift people from three helipads at Tandi, Udaipur and Satingri. In charge of the flight service at Kullu Yograj Dhiman said 20 persons were airlifted from the Satingri helipad. He said 21 persons were airlifted from Bhuntar airport to Tandi and the same number of persons were brought back to the Bhuntar airport.

He said 21 more persons were airlifted from Bhuntar airport to Udaipur in Lahaul-Spiti and another 18 persons were airlifted from Udaipur to the Bhuntar airport.

Official sources said around 900 persons applied and were waiting for their turn to move in and out of the tribal district.
