The district court here awarded life imprisonment to six people for murdering Harpal Singh Chatha, husband of Dirba panchayat president Parminder Kaur.
Announcing the judgment, additional sessions judge Varinder Aggarwal also imposed a fine of Rs 35,000 each on the accused who have been identified as Darshan Singh, ex-president of Dirba truck union; Gurtej Singh alias Teja; Avtar Singh alias Bhola; Mankhan Singh, Gurkirat Singh and Harjinder Singh.
However, the court acquitted three people- Avtar Singh alias Tari, Jarnail Singh and Bhoop Singh, due to lack of evidence against them.
Talking to Hindustan Times, Gurtej Singh, counsel for Avtar (Tari) and Bhoop Singh, said the case was registered in February last year and all the accused were booked under sections 302, 149 and 148 of the IPC.
Chatha's aid Gurmail Singh said the incident occurred when Chatha was attending a meeting of the association of commission agents, organised by the detractors of newly-elected association president Sanjeev Bansal. The members of the association present in the meeting wanted to remove Bansal from his post while Chatha was supporting him.
According to information available, Chatha was shot at by Gurtej Singh, one of Bansal's rivals, after they had a heated argument over the issue. The deceased was rushed to a private nursing home where he was declared brought dead.
