Police claimed to have solved six recent cases of snatching and robbery with the arrest of six members of a gang — four from Sector 40 and two from Dadumajra — on Wednesday. The gang used the ‘Activa modus operandi’ wherein they snatched while on a running scooter.
The police added they snatched gold chains to fund their drug addiction and lavish life.
Two gold chains, three mobiles, four scooters, four women purses and a knife have been recovered from the accused, who the police claim are habitual snatchers.
The accused have been identified as kingpin Vishal Sharma (25), of Housing Board Complex, Dhanas; Nitish Kumar (24), of Sector 41; Inderjeet Singh (23), of Buterala village in Sector 41; Harmeet Singh alias Noor (22), of Sector 27; Avtar Singh alias Tari (25), of Milk Colony, Dhanas, and Charanjit Singh Channi, of Sector 25.
Sharma and Tari, who ‘specialised’ in snatching of gold chains were arrested from Dadumajra.
Chandigarh SSP Sukhchain Singh said that after the recent snatching spree that where more than 10 snatchings were reported within a week — they had formed a special team to trace the snatchers.
“We identified the snatchers from CCTV footage and also cracked their modus operandi. An Activa gang was found to be operating in Sector 38 and Maloya. We searched our records. After a number of raids, we zeroed in on the suspects,” the SSP said.
He added that inspector Poonam Dilawari led a team from Sector 39 police station led one arrest team with Maloya SHO Ram Rattan Sharma leading the other.
