The commissionerate police have arrested six persons on charges of drug peddling and recovered 65 kg poppy husk and 3 kg opium from them in the city.
The accused have been identified as Balbir Singh and Prem Singh of Sarali Mand village in Tarn Taran district, Baljit Singh, Narinder Singh of Jhameri village in Ludhiana district, Jai Singh of Matoli, Jagjit Singh of Dgaar village in Patiala district.
Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, assistant commissioner of police (crime) Harjinder Singh said acting on a tip-off, a team of CIA staff laid on Monday night a trap near a petrol pump on Nakodar Road and stopped a truck (PB-10-C-6821).
The police party interrogated the truck driver, Balbir Singh, and cleaner Prem Singh and found 20 kg poppy husk and 3 kg opium in the vehicle and immediately arrested them, Singh said.
Singh said that both had been bringing contraband from Rajasthan for the past few years and were selling it in various districts of the state.
The ACP further said during their interrogation, Baljit Singh, Narinder Singh, Jai Singh and Jagjit Singh were arrested from separate locations and 45 kg poppy husk was recovered from them. He said separate cases have been registered against them at various police stations.
In another incident, a team of CIA staff also arrested Naveen Kumar Bhola and recovered four mobile phones he had snatched in the city.
