A day after a youth was killed in a roof collapse in the city due in an incident of roof collapse, seven more persons lost their lives on Friday as heavy rains continued to hit the region.
Five members of a family were killed when the roof of a house collapsed in Jassonangal village, 35 km from Amritsar. The deceased were identified as Harjinder Kaur (50), her sons Sonu (30), Gurinder Singh (25), Gurdeep Singh (27) and one nephew Sukhbir Singh (18).
Meanwhile, a seven-year-old girl, Palak, who was also sleeping in the same room survived with minor bruises.
Giving details about the incident that shocked the entire village, Jassonangal sarpanch Rajdeep Singh said, “The incident took place at about 5 am and all the victims were sleeping in a single room. It has been raining for the past two days and the roof collapsed as it was not made of concrete.”
As soon as the roof collapse took place, the villagers and other family members swung into action and started the rescue work to get the victims out of the debris. But by the time the debris was removed, all the five had died, he added.
There was shock and disbelief in the village over the incident. Raj Kaur, a relative of the family of the victims, said, “We still cannot believe that rain has taken the lives of five persons. The entire family is finished. We had even warned them not to sleep in that room as its roof was not cemented, but they continued to do so. The incident has left us in shock,” she added.
After the incident, the police rushed to the spot and the bodies were taken for post-mortem. In another incident, a woman, identified as Jaswant Kaur (50), was killed as roof of her house collapsed in Meerankot area of Amritsar on Friday. Her son Sarabjit Singh was injured. The incident occurred at around 9.30 am.
In fact, the woman and her family had spent the night away from home fearing roof collapse due to the rain, but they returned home in the morning.
In yet another incident, a 10-year-old girl, identified as Simarjit Kaur, died after the roof of her house collapsed in Ekta Nagar area of Amritsar on Friday evening.
The fire brigade and police officials said that they had no knowledge of the incident. However, deputy commissioner Ravi Bhagat said that he had received the report about the death of the girl.
Meanwhile, fire officer Sadiq Masih said that a couple of buildings have collapsed in Fateh Singh Colony and Jamadar Ki Haweli due to the rain and fire tenders have been pressed into action.
Notably, the roof of a house had collapsed on Thursday in Amritsar due to heavy rains. This had led to the death of a 23-year-old boy Khushal
Rain leaves city water-logged
Meanwhile, Amritsar on Friday received 64 mm rainfall. The rain left the streets of Amritsar waterlogged, forcing the commuters to wade through huge puddles. The MET officials have predicted mainly or generally cloudy sky with possibility of rain or thundershowers till September 11.
Flood control room set up
In view of the continuous rainfall for the past couple of days, the office of Amritsar deputy commissioner has established a flood control room in the city.
Stating that as of now there is no threat of flood, DC Ravi Bhagat said that the control room would function till September 30 around-the-clock. “In case of any untoward incident due to rain, residents can notify the flood control room by dialing 0183-2229125,” he said.
