The Mulepur police have seized a truck carrying 8.2 quintals of poppy husk in 41 bags (20 kg each) worth `24.60 lakh while the three accused managed to escape from the site taking the benefit of darkness.
While giving information to the media, SP(D) Pritpal Singh Thind said that they had got a tip- off on Sunda evening that a huge consignment of poppy husk was being carried on a truck no PB 13 AF 4715 (make Ashok Leyland).
He said a police team, led by SHO Sukhbir Singh, laid a naka near village Malaheri falling under Mullepur police station. He said a Volkswagaon Polo car no PB 11 0050 was leading a truck from the village Baghrian and when the police directed the car owner to stop the car, the driver reversed it in the opposite direction and fled along with the truck driver leaving the truck behind.
He said that during preliminary investigation, it has come to their knowledge that truck owner Makhan Singh, driver Amarjit Singh and Manjit Singh were facing various criminal cases related to drug smuggling. He said that theaccused had got installed a special chamber for smuggling of the contraband.
He said the truck was always led by a car in order to inform the truck driver about the police naka on their way.
He said a case under the NDPS Act has been registered against the accused and added that raiding parties have been dispatched in various directions to nab the accused.
