The CIA staff-1 of Ludhiana police commissionerate claim to have busted a gang that used to rob people who posted ads on e-tailing websites, including www.olx.in, a free classified ads portal.
The eight accused have been identified as Rahul Mallan of Delhi, the kingpin of the gang; Jaspreet Singh alias Preet of Mundian Kalan; Ramandeep alias Raman of Mohar Singh Nagar; Amit Kumar alias Jimmy of Mahadev Nagar; Paramjit Singh alias Binni of Mahadev Nagar; Vikas Kumar of Sukhdev Nagar; Simarjot Singh alias Siren of Mohar Singh; and Neeraj Sharma alias Ashu Sharma of Ganesh Nagar.
The police have recovered a Hyundai i20 car, a .315 bore weapon and sharp-edged weapons from the possession of accused, who the police said were facing criminal cases at various police stations.
Police said the accused used to search e-tailing websites, including olx.in, and used to summon people, who posted ads wishing to sell valuables, on the pretext of purchasing their products. However, when the seller used to visit them to crack a deal, the accused used to rob them.
They added that all accused were aged between 22 and 28 and were well educated.
Assistant commissioner of police (crime) Jaswinder Singh said apart from robbing the sellers, the accused also used to target people coming out from banks and ATMs after withdrawing money.
He claimed that the accused had confessed to have committed several incidents of loot and snatching in Delhi, Haryana and Punjab. A case has been registered against the accused at Ladhowal police station.
