9 arrested for illegal sand mining, nine tractors impounded

The Sandaur police arrested nine persons for illegal sand mining from the Kalyana canal of the district on Saturday. The police have also impounded nine tractors and four cars from the spot.


The suspects have been identified as Baljeet Singh, Harshpreet Singh, Gurpinder Singh of Maholi Khurd, Karamjeet Singh and Hakam Singh of Maholi Kalan, Bharat Singh of Ludhiana, Labh Singh of Jitwal, Mohammad Nishan of Chammat and Nirmal Singh of Akarbarpur.

Talking to Hindustan Times, Sandaur police station in-charge said that the police got a tip-off that some people were selling sand illegally from the Kalyana canal near Lohatbhatti village. On Friday night, the police conducted a surprise raid and arrested nine persons, who were digging out sand illegally with tractors. He said the police had also registered a case against 10 other people for their alleged involvement in illegal sand mining.

A case under section 21 of the Punjab Mining Act and sections 427, 379, 188 of the IPC has been registered against all the suspects.
