The 45 differently abled students of four schools, who had excelled at the state-level special Olympics held in Ludhiana in November last year, were honoured by the district administration during the Republic Day celebrations here.

"It was probably the first time when the administration recognised efforts of such students," said Amarjit Singh Anand, founder president of Chaanan Association, an NGO working for mentally retarded children, adding that, "What was more encouraging for us that out of a total 67 award recipients, 45 were mentally retarded students."

Among those honoured included 6 students from Asha School run by Vajra Army Wives Welfare Association, Cantonment, 14 from Saint Joseph Convent Special School, 6 from Red Cross Prayas special school and 19 from Udaan special school.

"Two of those honoured from Udaan School are international athletes. As an activist for the disability sector, it is very satisfactory for me and encouraging for all those who were awarded," said Anand, who was also instrumental in drafting the new disability bill lying pending for approval in Parliament.
