Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Sunday declared Major General Suresh Khajuria (Retd) as its candidate for the Gurdaspur Lok Sabha seat.

The bypoll has been scheduled for October 11 and results will be declared on October 15.

Addressing a press conference in Jalandhar, party leaders including Sangrur MP Bhagwant Mann and leader of Opposition Sukhpal Singh Khaira said that the decision to field Khajuria has been taken after due diligence with the Gurdaspur unit of the party and the Majha region leaders and volunteers.

Khaira said that the 64- year-old Major General Suresh Khajuria is an old party volunteer and is a local resident of Pathankot, falling within the Gurdaspur Lok Sabha segment.

“ We are proud to state that our candidate has a distinguished career in the armed forces by serving the country. But Congress and BJP are likely to be outsiders and parachuters,” Khaira said.

Taking to media, Khajuria said that the Gurdaspur constituency has been neglected by the traditional parties in last four decades.

“I will contest this poll to register a comfortable win. Our fight is against Congress and BJP governments who have failed to fulfill their poll promises. I will fight for the welfare of the people,” he said.
