Punjab Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convener Sucha Singh Chhotepur on Tuesday demanded the resignation of state agriculture minister Tota Singh over the pesticide scam.

Chhotepur said the minister was responsible equally for the crime for which former agriculture director Mangal Singh Sandhu is now under arrest. “Being head of the state agriculture department, Tota Singh cannot get away by saying he knew nothing about what all going on under his charge or on the ground,” said the AAP leader.

“For a Minister who claims to know all about farming and farmers’ problems, it seems improbable that he knew nothing about the pesticide-purchase scam. During the whitefly attack, he should have been on ground zero to find out the spurious pesticides, take remedial measures, fix responsibility and sack the director of agriculture on his own,” Chhotepur further said.

The leader claimed that Tota Singh had no control over his department and so was reluctant to take action against the former director who was close to the CM. “Tota Singh remained silent until all crop was lost. He was touring the US and Canada to woo the NRIs (non-resident Indians) and unaware of the damage back home,” said the AAP state convener.
