The hard times that people are facing these days due to demonetisation of high value currency, has taken the Samaritan out of some politicians.
While others have limited themselves to verbal sympathies with those standing in serpentine lines outside banks to exchange or withdraw currency notes, at least two Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders have turned ‘chaiwala’ and ‘paniwala’ to assuage the frayed tempers.
Dr Ravjot Singh and Paramjit Sachdeva, AAP candidates from Sham Churasi and Hoshiarpur respectively, were seen serving tea and water to queued-up citizens in front of banks in their respective constituencies. Their media managers captured those perfect moments in their cameras and duly forwarded them to the ‘right’ persons.
Some called it a political gimmickry knowing that holding kettles would not have come easy to someone living a privileged life, but these leaders said they were actually moved by the plight of the common man who had to spend hours in banks to get a little cash.
Whether this philanthropy gets rewarded in the elections, only time will tell, but the ‘polite’ gesture certainly gave some respite to the restive crowd.
