To help taxpayers file their returns and redress their grievances, an aayakar seva kendra (ASK) has been opened in the Income-Tax office here which was inaugurated by Central Board of Direct Taxes chairperson Dr Sudha Sharma on Monday. Speaking on the occasion, the senior most IRS officer said that the new outlet would ensure hassle-free tax payments and time-bound response to grievances of taxpayers.

"ASK outlets are meant to be a single window solution for all tax services," she said.

She claimed that e-filing of I-T returns had encouraged voluntary return deposits and compared to last year, the department had registered 43% growth in the current financial year.

She said following the refund scam, Reserve Bank of India had been asked to add more security features in the system.

The department was also ensuring that the employers remitted the tax deducted at source (TDS) deducted from its employees in time, she added.

She revealed that due to computerisation, processing time of tax returns had considerably reduced.

Urging the people to file returns genuinely, she claimed that tax rates in the country were very much low as compared to those in many other developed and developing countries.

"Income-tax should not be considered a burden as it is the price every citizen has to pay to live in a civilised society," she added.
