The Fazilka police now have made 11 arrests in the Abohar farmhouse murder case but the family of victim Bhim Sain Tank (27) is angry that they still spared liquor baron Akali leader Shiv Lal Doda and his nephew, Amit.
Of Friday, various organisations joined the Dalit family in a protest march through Ahobar and submitting a memorandum to superintendent of police Harjit Singh. The protesters raised slogans against Doda and the Akali government, while the victim’s family decided not to hold the prayer for him as long as the main accused were free.
A case under Sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder), 148 (armed riot), and 120-B (punishment for criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) is registered against 17 men, seven of them unidentified.
Public pressure forced police to add the names of Doda and Amit to these 17. “Accused Sukhjit Singh, Monu, and Gurpreet surrendered on Friday, while a hunt for more is on,” said Fazilka senior superintendent of police Indermohan Singh Bhatti.
At the liquor baron’s farmhouse last Friday morning, Tank was attacked with sharp-edged weapons, and Harry, one of Doda’s workers, was alleged to be the culprit. On Friday night, Tank died at a hospital in Amritsar. His associate, Gurjant Singh, whose limbs were also severed at the farmhouse, is under treatment.
