A 'thief' who was beaten up by locals at Abohar on Tuesday night and later handed over to the police has claimed innocence and accused the locals of beating him up for no fault of his.
Both parties have demanded action against each other and a police investigation is on.
According to information, unidentified people had stolen 19 mobile phones besides cash from the shop-cum-house of one Chaman Lal, a resident of Durga Colony, recently.
On Tuesday night, Chaman, along with others, caught hold of a man presuming him to be the thief and after beating him up locked him up in the house. On Wednesday morning, they handed over the man to the police, demanding action against him.
The man identified as Vikramjit of the local New Abadi claimed that he was on his way home after seeing off his relative at the railway station. But Chaman and others beat him up and later illegally confined him at his house, he alleged, demanding action against the locals.
Meanwhile, Chaman and others staged a dharna in front of City 1 police station, accusing the police of dilly-dallying in the matter, and sought immediate action against the thief.
Abohar SP Varinder Singh Brar said a probe was on and further action would be taken accordingly.
