Abolish death penalty in Punjab-Khera to SAD

Socialist Party (India) national vice-president and Malta Boat Tragedy Probe Mission chairman Balwant Singh Khera, who has dragged the SAD to court on alleged dual constitution issue, has fired another salvo at the state's ruling dispensation on the question of clemency to death row convict Devinder Singh Bhullar, challenging it to amend the penal code and abolish death penalty in Punjab by invoking Article 254 (2) of the Constitution.

Khera said that the SAD was asking for condonation of death penalty of Bhullar not on moral or humanitarian grounds, but under political compulsions.

"If it is not true, then why has the party not taken up the case of all prisoners on death row," he questioned.

"It is matter of regret that a party, which claims to be the propagator of secular and moral values as imbibed in holy Guru Granth Sahib, is raising its voice not in favour of humanity but to seek mercy for an extremist," he added.

He said even the concern shown by the SAD for Bhullar was not genuine as it had chosen to speak out in his favour when his mercy petition had been returned by the president. "Had it been serious about the matter the SAD could make it an election issue or taken it up at an early stage of hearing," he alleged.
