They stopped at a shop to meet someone, where the accused intercepted them and abused them. Following the heated arguments, Jagmel opened fire at, both, the father and the son. Rupinder was hit on his left shoulder and was rushed to the nearby hospital from where the doctors referred them to Rajindra Hospital, where his condition was said to be stable.

Following the incident, the police registered a case against the accused and his son Jagjeet Singh and Chanda Ram, all residents of Sassa Gujran in Patiala under Sections 307 (Attempt to murder) and 34 (Common intention) of the IPC. The SHO said as per the statement of the complaint, the accused was carrying a pistol that was used for committing the crime.
