A day after an accused involved in over a dozen of criminal cases managed to escape from the custody of three policemen after reportedly alluring them to ride in a private car, the accused continued to be absconding while the cops landed in the Amritsar central jail on Tuesday.
The cops, belonging to the Patiala police, have been identified as head constable Gurdeep Singh, head constable Gurjeet Singh and constable Jasjit Singh.
They were arrested by the Amritsar (rural) police for allegedly assisting the accused in escape and sent to the jail.
Notably, the accused, Bhupinder Singh, alias, Sonu Kangla, who is also involved in NDPS cases, was brought to Amritsar by the Patiala police for a hearing by a bus. However, after the hearing on their way back to Patiala, the accused allegedly managed to convince the cops to travel in a private vehicle arranged by him.
And soon, an i20 car picked them up for Patiala. However, they would have hardly travelled 30 km on the National Highway-1, two cars intercepted their vehicle and around 5-6 men allegedly took away the accused at the gun point along with the car, leaving the cops behind on the NH.
When contacted senior superintendent of police (Amritsar, rural) Jasdeep Singh told Hindustan Times: “We have arrested the three cops and sent them to the jail. However, the accused and the people who helped him escape from the custody of the cops are still absconding. Since the accused belongs to Amritsar and most of the cases against were registered in Amritsar, we are working in tandem with the city police to arrest them.”
Police were identifying the people who were in regular touch with the accused, who would be nabbed again, said the SSP. He said the escape was planned by Bhupinder Singh and the cops accompanying him fell in his trap.
