Though his team towed away thousands of vehicles parked wrongly on the roads, yet he was one of the favorite men for the majority of the city residents.

He bullied the traffic violators, inflicted challans on them and enforced the traffic rules strictly, but the people still praised him.

The man in khakhi, assistant commissioner of police (ACP), Swapan Sharma, who made driving on the city roads comparatively easier, has been transferred to Chief Minister's security. His batch mate Naveen Singla, ACP (east) has also been transferred.

The development has disappointed his subordinates and many city residents.

Coping with the parking chaos, one of the major problems of the city, Sharma kicked off the tow-away drive in February this year. As the seven recovery vehicles hit the roads of the city, thousands of violators faced the music.

The traffic police towed away around 13,324 vehicles for wrong parking from different roads of the city and generated revenue of Rs 9,32 lakh.

He also initiated a drive against assembled three-wheelers, which were a major hurdle in the easy flow of the traffic in the city.

The traffic wing of Ludhiana police commissionerate challaned 1,864 three-wheelers for overloading and other violations. It impounded 826 assembled three-wheelers till date to ease the traffic jams and to curb pollution.

"The average speed of vehicles inside the city went up from 16.6 km per hour to 21.5 km per hour. The accident rate was minimised by up to 60%. During his tenure the traffic wing challaned and impounded vehicles of several senior officers and leaders," said a senior official in the department.

The official Facebook page of the traffic police, Ludhiana has been flooded with messages in his favor and slamming the decision about his transfer.

According to a Facebook user, "he is an officer of good conduct and is courageous. Though he busted several notorious gangs and arrested many criminals, but he has been known for his initiatives to ease the traffic."
