A team of the district administration on Tuesday evening conducted raids in Raipur Kalan near Ajnala and unearthed the illegal mining going on there.
After complaints from residents of Raipur Kalan that illegal mining was going on at an extensive stage in the village, the team raided the area and found trucks and trolleys loaded with sand.
District deputy commissioner Rajat Aggarwal said strict instructions had been issued to stop the mining in the Ajanla area and officials of the department concerned had also been told to take appropriate measures so that illegal mining did not take place. When the team led by the Ajnala SDM reached the spot, it found two trucks loaded with sand whereas others were ready to get loaded. The Amritsar (rural) police have registered a case under the mining act against two persons.
In June also, the deputy commissioner along with SSP Amritsar (rural) PS Virk had conducted raids and unearthed the illegal mining going on in Ajnala sector.
Meanwhile, alleging that the illegal mining was taking place due to the lax attitude of some
officials, leader of the SAD (Panj Pardhani) Baldev Singh, Sirsa, said, "We have been raising the issue of illegal mining in Ajnala sector but not much has happened over the years."
The police needed to nail the real culprits behind the illegal act and not just arrest drivers of trucks and trolleys, Sirsa added.
He claimed that the condition in various villages was pathetic and digging was done up to 30 to 40 feet. Some houses were also in danger, he claimed. He also mentioned that more seizure could have been made in Raipur Kalan raids, but the action was delayed.
