With a view to implement the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), 2003, the district administration has issued 1,027 challans to people found consuming tobacco in public.

Additional deputy commissioner Jasbir Singh said this during a meeting held to ascertain the effect of the measures taken to curb the sale and purchase of tobacco and tobacco-based products in the district.

He added that the challans issued to violators pertained to the period from January to April. The ADC said May 31 is observed as the World No-Tobacco Day. "This year, the Punjab government has decided to observe this day as Anti-tobacco pledge day," he said.

The ADC called upon the students and teachers of various educational institutions and officials of different departments to take a pledge on this day to abstain from the consumption of tobacco. He urged the police to conduct raids at public places to curb the consumption of tobacco.
