A woman was allegedly murdered in a village here by her adopted daughter, who kept the body in a box for five days.
Victim Rani (60), a native of Jhoke Harihar village, 6 km from here, had been a member of the village panchayat for the past 15 years.

She was staying with Jyoti (20), her adopted daughter, whom she had found on a roadside years ago. She had lost her husband besides two sons in the past.

The woman allegedly went missing five days ago. Jyoti had also lodged a complaint with the police about her going missing. But the police could not find her. On Thursday, neighbours noticed foul smell emanating from the house and informed the police. When the police searched the house, they found the body of the woman stuffed in a locked box.

Jyoti, whose engagement ceremony was performed recently, allegedly confessed to the crime of killing her. She told the police that Rani forbade her to move out on Sunday, following which she hit her in the head and she did on the spot. She said that she put the body in the box and locked it from outside.

The police have arrested Jyoti after registering a case against her and started investigation. The police do not rule out the role of some outsider in the case. The body, which was in a very bad condition, was sent for postmortem.
