Three days after being released from the Sangrur jail, dalit leaders on Monday resumed their protest outside the office of the deputy commissioner (DC) demanding the cancellation of auction of reserved panchayati land in Balad Kalan, Matoi and Namol villages of the district.

Hundreds of dalit leaders, protesting under the banner of Zamin Prapti Sangharsh Samiti (ZPSS), gathered outside the deputy commissioner's office here.

Addressing the gathering, ZPSS leader Mukesh Malaud said that it was decided in the presence of the Sangrur DC and SSP that 40% land would be given to the dalit farmers at a low price.
But, the district administration is going back on its words, he said.

They also demanded action against the police officers who had lathicharged the protesting dalit leaders during the auction on May 27 at the office of the block development and panchayat officer in Bhawanigarh, following which 41 agitators were arrested for allegedly attacking the police.

The Dalit leaders said that they would continue the agitation until their demands were met.
