A three-day annual conference of the Indian Association of Biomedical Scientists (IABMS) began at Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University (HPAU), Palampur, on Friday.
HPAU vice-chancellor Dr KK Katoch inaugurated the conference attended by 125 biomedical experts and scientists from various leading research institutes of the country.
Speaking on the occasion, Katoch stressed upon the need to take strenuous efforts to keep the environment safe and healthy for the existence of human life.
He also emphasised that there should be strict mechanism to check toxicity in the environment through the application of applied aspects of science.
Katoch expressed concern over modern farming becoming a cause of toxicity for human and animal health due to indiscriminate use of chemicals.
He underlined the need to develop synergy between medical institutes and higher institutes of education and research for quality results.
"We hope that the discussions in the conference will get a practical shape for the benefit of end users," he said.
The organising secretary of the conference and head of microbiology department of HPAU, Dr SS Kanwar said the participants would discuss issues pertaining to environmental toxicity and health, food safety, causes of cancer and technological innovations.
Dr OP Sharma, scientist emeritus, also underlined the importance of a clean environment and spoke about the science of life.
Dr G Victor Rajamanickam, president and Dr S Karthikeyen, secretary of IABMS, also spoke on various issues related to environment and health. Nineteen participating scientists who have made contribution to the field were honoured on the occasion.
