As the administration was gearing up for ensuring smooth polling for Talwandi Sabo assembly bypoll, the police in the town on Tuesday had to grapple with protesters of different organisations.

Protesters, agitating under the banner of the Government Pensioners' Front, were stopped by the police from coming out of the grains market. They were protesting against the new law on damage to public and private property during any protest in the state. Heavy police were deployed to control the situation and the police dropped the protesters at places outside the town in their buses.

The police also detained members of the physically challenged persons union, who were staging a protest at Thana chowk here. In addition to this, the police also detained members of Sakhar prerak union, who were staging a protest in support of their demands near the bus stand. All the protesters were released later. DSP, Talwandi Sabo, Malkiat Singh, however, denied having detained any of the protesters and said that they were persuaded to call off the agitations.
