A minor tussle between the Akali and BJP allies on Tuesday in Tarn Taran boiled into a clash that left five people injured.
The Bharatiya Janata Party lodged a police complaint against some people, including local Akali leaders, but no case is registered yet. The other side also lodged a complaint. The incident before civic body elections has widened the rift between the state’s ruling allies in Tarn Taran, where deputy superintendent of police (city) Sukhwinder Singh said: “It was a minor tussle.”
“It started when Bajrang Dal activist Noble had a minor argument with BJP’s Sonu about Ward 6,” said the DSP. “Later, some local workers of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) came out in support of the Bajrang Dal man and the fight started,” he added. It all happened during the BJP dharna against the police at Chaar Khamba Chowk in Tarn Taran when the Akalis brought the Bajrang Dal people over. The police said they had reacted quickly to defuse the situation. People from both sides were wounded but one received serious injuries. The SAD said the BJP workers had started it.
