Class-8 student Arshdeep Kaur of Channu in Malout subdivision of this district was on Friday crushed to death under the wheels of a New Deep company bus of a Gidderbaha Akali leader at her village in the Lambi assembly constituency.

The accident happened around 5.30pm, when the girl was standing on the roadside, waiting to go home after tuition, and the bus was going from Dabwali to Gidderbaha. As the bus driver and conductor fled, the enraged villagers smashed the abandoned vehicle. Police moved in quickly and sent the girl’s body for autopsy.

Bus co-owner Hardeep Singh “Dimpy” Dhillon is Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) halqa in-charge of Gidderbaha and a confidant of deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal. “Anyone found at fault will not be spared,” said Malout deputy superintendent of police Manvinderbir Singh.

Lambi SHO Gurpreet Singh could not be contacted and Dimpy Dhillon declined to comment. One of the leader’s close aides, though, claimed that the bus driver had only been trying to avoid hitting a tractor-trailer coming in from the wrong side. “It’s unfortunate that the girl standing on the roadside was run over,” he said.
