Leaders of the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) finally found time to visit the family of cable operator Jaswinder Singh Jassi, who attempted suicide on March 28 by consuming pesticide and died in hospital two days later.

Amritsar South SAD MLA and chief parliamentary secretary (CPS) Inderbir Singh Bolaria, along with SAD urban unit president, Upkar Singh Sandhu visited the residence of the deceased cable operator in Punjab Wali Gali on Friday and expressed their condolences.

When contacted, the two Akali leaders refused to divulge the nature of their talks with Balbir Kaur, the widow of the cable operator. They claimed that they had gone to express their condolences and assure them of help.

According to a family member, Bolaria promised to give the family financial help from his MLA fund. Sandhu too promised financial help from his party.

According to witnesses at the residence, the two Akali leaders also held a closed-door meeting with the widow of Jassi and his son. However, the family did not disclose the nature of these talks.

Since the death of the cable operator, leaders of the Congress, the Aam Aadmi Party and of other parties have come forward to express solidarity with the family. It was only on Friday that the SAD finally decided to send two of its representatives. So far, no leader of the BJP has visited the family.
