The district rural police have booked an Akali sarpanch of Kalyanpur village and his supporters for attempt to murder, after they allegedly thrashed a resident over a property dispute on Tuesday night.

The victim, identified as a shopkeeper Paramjit Pal, entered into a verbal altercation with supporters of the sarpanch Iqbal Singh, sources said. The supporters did leave once, but threatened Pal with dire consequences. Pal informed the police and two cops did arrive, but failed to do anything as the mob led by the sarpanch attacked Pal.

On Wednesday, a team from the Lambra police station led by ASI Kewal Singh visited the village. Later, they also took the statement of Pal, who had been admitted at the local civil hospital.

SP (D) Rajinder Singh, deputed by SSP Rajinder Singh Hayer to inquire into the case, said the property dispute was the reason for the clash.

"We have booked the sarpanch Iqbal Singh under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of IPC. As his supporters have also received injuries, their statements are being recorded to register a cross-case against Paramjit and others," the SP said.
