An Akali sarpanch was arrested in one of the two rape cases registered here on Saturday. However, the police tried best to hide the political designation of the suspect.

In first of the case, police arrested Sukhdeep Singh, who is also an Akali Sarpanch of village Naruana, for allegedly raping a Dalit girl for five years on promise of marriage and concealing from victim the truth of being married.

25-year-old victim of Bathinda city had alleged that accused raped her for five years on promise to marry but concealed the truth of being already married. Deputy superintendent of police (DSP)Gurmeet Singh feigned ignorance about the accused being a sarpanch.

Singh said, "The girl had complained of raped by accused Sukhdeep Singh from last five years on promise of marriage while the accused allegedly had concealed the truth of being married from her. We had arrested the accused and booked him under sections of IPC."

"I do not know if accused is Sarpanch," said the DSP.However, sources in the police confirmed that sarpanch belongs to ruling party in state and police is avoiding this part of information due to alliance of the accused with ruling party.

In second case, twenty-five year old victim of Maur Khurd village in Bathinda had claimed of being raped by an accused Leela Singh (35) of Maisarkhana who was a partner with her husband Sewak Singh.

Victim in her complaint alleged that accused raped her on October 20 this year when found alone at home. Police had booked the accused under sections 376 and 34 of IPC and is on hunt to arrest the accused.
