Palwinder Singh, 35, Akali sarpanch of Palian Kalan village near Bhadson in Patiala district, was shot dead on Thursday following a heated exchange with villagers over the laying of a water supply pipeline.

Police have booked main accused Mewa Singh and his relatives Gurjant Singh, Gurpreet Singh and Harbans Kaur on the charge of murder.

The incident happened around 8am, when Mewa started arguing with the sarpanch over the laying of the pipeline outside his house. The accused allegedly tried to run his tractor over the pipes, but Palwinder stopped him. Mewa went inside his house and brought a .32-bore licensed revolver, with which he opened fire at the sarpanch, police said.

The bullet pierced Palvinder's chest and he was rushed to the local Rajindra Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.

Deputy superintendent of police Sewa Singh Malhi said the accused and the sarpanch had an old political rivalry.

He said the body had been handed over to the family members after a post-mortem.

"Police have launched a manhunt to nab the accused, who managed to flee after the crime," Malhi said.
