In a spillover of a political rivalry, a Congress supporter Gurjinder Singh of Barilla Khurd village was allegedly assaulted by one Nirmal Singh and his accomplices with sharp-edged weapons.

Gurjinder suffered a fracture in his arm and a head injury during the attack that occurred on April 8.

The victim alleged that his co-villagers Nirmal Singh, his sons Jagtar Singh and Lalli, one Gurpreet and five-six others waylaid him in Kalanaur town and assaulted him. The attackers were said to have supported the Shiromani Akali Dal in the assembly elections.

"Though our dispute was a personal one, my rivals are taking advantage of their closeness to a former Akali minister. They are roaming freely as police have not bothered to arrest them after the attack," Gurjinder alleged.

Kalanaur SHO Prem Kumar said that they are looking for the suspects, booked under Sections 326, 324 and 325 of the IPC.

The SHO was, however, unaware that Gurjinder was discharged from hospital on April 9. "Gurjinder was referred to the Amritsar civil hospital but he got himself admitted to a Batala hospital. I sent a police party to Amritsar to record his statement. When I came to know that Gurjinder had not gone to Amritsar, I dispatched a team to Batala," he said.
