Akali supporters clashed with Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) workers in Nangal Arayian village on Saturday night. Five people were injured in the melee.

Balwinder Singh and Manjit Singh were reportedly attacked for not casting votes in the favour of Akali sarpanch in the recently concluded panchayat polls.

"A mob led by Malkit Singh, Iqbal Singh and former Akali sarpanch Ajmer Singh Soni attacked the duo with sharp-edged weapons," said Amarjeet Singh, a village resident.

"BSP district general secretary Kamal Dev Jandu Singha was informed, who sent the police to the spot."

Balwinder has been grievously injured and has been admitted to a private hospital, while Manjit has been admitted at the Kartarpur civil hospital.

Ajmer Singh Soni, Palwinder Singh and Maljkit Singh have also been injured.

BSP general secretary Dev said: "To protest against the atrocities by the Akali Dal workers, party workers will block the national highway at Nurpur village (Jalandhar-Pathankot road), soon."

Sukhwinder Singh, a panch of the village, "The Akali workers were abused. The incident is not linked to the polls. Some Dalits had been provoking our members for days. There was no boycott of Dalits."

Kartarpur police have registered a case against Malkit Singh, Palwinder Singh, Ajmer Singh Soni, Arwinder Singh, Kuldeep Kaur, Manjit Kaur, Iqbal Singh, Sonu and some unidentified persons under Sections 307 (attempt to murder), 323 (voluntary causing hurt), 324 (using dangerous weapons), 506 (criminal intimidation), 148 (rioting) and 149 (crime in a group) of the IPC.

"No arrest has been made so far as both parties have submitted complaints against each other. Investigations are on," said Kartarpur SHO Surinder Pal Singh.
