Former Union minister Manish Tewari said on Monday that in targeting Punjab Congress president Capt Amarinder Singh alone during their political conferences at Fatehgarh Sahib on Sunday, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) had only betrayed their fears after having read the writing on the wall and realised that people of Punjab had already made up their mind on who was going to be their next chief minister.
In a statement, the senior Congress leader said the Akalis as well as AAP leaders, instead of listing out any positive agenda for the state or any achievements, had only criticised Amarinder. He said their fears were understandable as Amarinder commanded the confidence of the masses across the state.
“He has a proven record and has been tried and tested,” Tewari said, while pointing out that the people of Punjab were eagerly awaiting his (Amarinder’s) return as the chief minister for good governance.
Amarinder’s popularity has been proved beyond doubt, whether by defeating Arun Jaitley (now Union finance minister) from Amritsar or the mobilisation of about 5 lakh people in Bathinda for the function where he took charge as the Punjab Congress chief, the former Ludhiana MP said.
The Congress leader said people were disillusioned with the Akalis, who had ruined the state politically, economically, financially and socially beyond redemption during the past nine years. The AAP is a bunch of opportunists who have started hiving together in the misplaced illusion of making something big, he said.
“But people of Punjab are politically wise enough not to commit any mistake, lest they end up regretting their decision like the people in Delhi are doing now for having elected the AAP to power,” he added.
