Various Akali leaders of Majha region demanded immediate resignation and a criminal case against Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) chief Partap Singh Bajwa on Sunday.

In a joint press conference, chief parliamentary secretaries (CPS) Virsa Valtoha, Inderbir Bolaria, Harmeet Sandhu and Baba Bakala MLA Mandeep Manna said, "The PPCC chief must resign on moral grounds for purchasing Shamlat land and evading stamp duty."

Referring to a statement made by Captain Amarinder Singh, an Akali leader said, "Now Bajwa's own party men have started maintaining distance from him. Punjab Congress MLAs should be vocal about the alleged corrupt practices of their party president."

Stressing that it was high time for Congress high command to decide to whether it would support Bajwa by retaining him as PPCC chief or sack him, another Akali leader said, "If Congress high command does not take exemplary action against Bajwa, then it will be presumed that such acts of Congress leaders have their party's full support."

The Akali leaders pointed out that at national level, Congress-led UPA government had faced several scams.

Alleging that purchase of Shamlat land by Bajwa was a major scam; the Akali leaders of Majha demanded immediate and stern criminal action against him so that nobody ever dares to misappropriate the villagers' joint holding.

CPS Bolaria said, "Bajwa must clarify his position or the law will take its own course."
