The Akal Takht has advised the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leaders to “never give-up their ‘panthic’ identity and ideology just for the sake of winning elections”.
In an informal chat with mediapersons here on Thursday, Akal Takht jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh lamented the Akali leaders for “following the BJP and in the process giving up their panthic outlook and ideology, just for the sake of winning the Delhi assembly polls”.
Asked about the defeat of the four Akali candidates in Delhi, the jathedar held the BJP responsible, saying had the saffron party sought the support of Sirsa-based Dera Sacha Sauda, the Akali candidates would have won.
“This will happen if you choose to forego and forget your panthic stance. This is a lesson for the Akalis that they must not forget their history and their Sikh identity,” he added.
The jathedar observed that had the Akalis kept their separate identity intact, and then campaigned in Delhi, they would have won. But, they chose to follow the BJP diktats and paid the price, he added, while referring to the support sought from the Sirsa dera.
When a reporter drew his attention to the reports of some Akali leaders donning saffron cap of the RSS while campaigning in Delhi, the Jathedar said, “This again is a case of forgetting your own identity and they (Akalis) paid the price for doing this.”
