Soccer girls of Alakhpura village of Bhiwani district have brought laurels to the state in the Under-19 and Under-17 categories by clinching gold and silver medals, respectively, in national school games held in Pune recently.
In both categories 14 girls from this nondescript village of Haryana were part of the state team, while Munish Rao from this village captained the Under-19 category team of the state.
Munish, Manju, Sanju of this village, who participated at an international soccer event in 2013, also participated in the national school games.
Govardhan Dass, who coaches the girls in the village’s government school playground, said that owing to tough lifestyle, the village youngsters were by default better than their urban counterparts in the playground. He said that despite lack of facilities, girls work hard to spare time for playing after performing their household chores and school work.
He said that one girl Sanju from this village had been awarded the best player of the tournament in prestigious Subrato Cup in 2013 and had received a cash prize of Rs 25,000 and a laptop.
It is noteworthy that several girls from this village, studying in government senior secondary school, had played soccer in international events.
Buoyed by the achievement of soccer girls, the Haryana government had announced to set up a residential soccer academy at the village in which 25 outstanding players would be trained after the trials.
