All the 15 members of the Congress, who had to file their nomination papers for 15 wards of the municipal committee, Guru Har Sahai, on Friday, failed to submit their papers. Friday was the last day to file papers for the council polls. While the Congressmen attributed the failure to the handiwork of the Akali leadership, the local administration claimed that the Congressmen did not reach the office in time.

Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi, Congress MLA from Guru Har Sahai, alleged that when, earlier in the day, they visited the office of the returning officer-cum-SDM, Guru Har Sahai, to submit the nomination papers of 15 Congress candidates, they found that a large number of Akali supporters, allegedly armed with sharp-edged weapons and sticks were roaming there.

During conversation, the authorities suggested them to come after the Akalis submit their papers to avoid any clash. But, when the Congressmen reached the office ion the afternoon, a large number of Akali supporters bolted the main gate of the MC office, while the authorities, including the police, remained a mute spectator to the entire drama, Sodhi alleged.

By the time, they managed to enter the office of the SDM, he refused to receive the nomination papers on the excuse that they were late, Sodhi said.

DPS Kharbanda, deputy commissioner, Ferozepur, rebuffed the charges levelled by the Congressmen and said that no nomination papers were received between 11.00 am to 3 pm and, as per the report of the returning officer, none from the Congress party reached his office to submit the nomination papers.
