Second time councillor Amaninder Bajaj has been unanimously elected new mayor of Patiala. In the meeting of councillors conducted on Tuesday, the election for the 34-year-old SAD leader was conducted in presence of SAD incharge for Patiala, Sikander Singh Maluka, and rural development minister Surjit Singh Rakhra.
Amaninder is the son of Patiala district SAD president Indermohan Singh Bajaj. He will be fourth mayor of Patiala municipal corporation.
The post had fallen vacant following resignation of Jaspal Pardhan, whose name figured in the alleged murder of his 'daughter-in-law', Parampreet Kaur.
Sources said SAD high command was convinced that Pardhan had no role in 'murder' case of his 'daughter-in-law', but the party decided not to re-instate him to avoid controversy as the case was pending with the Punjab and Haryana high court following Parampreet's father filed a plea seeking a CBI probe into the incident.
