Projecting state Congress chief Capt Amarinder Singh as the “saviour” of the rights of people of Punjab, leaders of the Congress who gathered at a political conference at Fatehgarh Sahib on Sunday appealed to people to vote for the Congress in the next Assembly elections and make Amarinder as the chief minister.
While addressing the gathering, Amarinder lashed out at the SAD-BJP alliance, saying Parkash Singh Badal-led Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) is not the real one. “The real Akali Dal is the one led by Akali Phoola Singh, whereas the one led by the Badals controls SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar, and Makkar controls the Akal Takht,” he told the jampacked audience, striking a religious chord.
The Amritsar MP said there was no village in the state where innocent people were not booked in false cases. He said that on coming to power they would cancel all such cases.
Amarinder held agriculture minister Tota Singh directly responsible for the agrarian crisis as “spurious seeds and pesticides” were supplied. “To make people of Punjab prosperous, we need to bring in industry, and give power and skills to people. Poor children are not getting proper education, students are failing in exams,” he said.
Amarinder said deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal is building hotels and selling sand costlier than flour. Lashing out at the chief minister, he said the CM was splurging money on sangat darshan while his government is mortgaging government properties to raise money to meet day-to-day expenses.
Earlier, speaking on the occasion, state Congress vice-president Lal Singh referred to the situation of fiscal emergency in the state, and demanded the imposition of Governor’s Rule in Punjab.
Making a case for Amarinder as the next CM, Congress Legislature Party leader Charanjeet Singh Channi said the people of Punjab wanted the state Congress president to be back as CM. Slamming the Badals, he said they had no right to come to the Jor Mela as they had miserably failed to protect the rights of people of Punjab, especially Sikhs.
Congress’ national youth wing president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring asked people to vote for Amarinder. Fatehgarh Sahib MLA Kuljit Singh Nagra, who organised the rally, demanded the holy city status for Fatehgarh Sahib from Amarinder after the Congress came to power in the state.
Former chief minister Rajinder Kaur Bhattal said Prime Minister Narendra Modi was splurging money on foreign tours and had ignored the plight of poor farmers.
Bir Devinder cosies up to Amarinder
Former deputy speaker of Punjab Vidhan Sabha Bir Devinder Singh was seen cosying up to Capt Amarinder Singh. He has been Amarinder’s critic and had even announced to join the SAD and Manpreet Badal-led People’s Party of Punjab. He was seen having a cordial chat with Amarinder on the dais.
Wife supports Nagra
Fatehgarh Sahib MLA Kuljit Nagra, who seemed to have put in hard work to make the rally a success, was supported by his wife Mandeep Kaur in managing women’s enclosure in the audience. She was making women sit in rows and told HT that she liked to be more among people than on the dais.
