The Amarnath Yatra will not commence from the traditional and longer Pahalgam route because of the heavy accumulation of snow. However, it will start from the shorter Baltal route as scheduled on June 28.
The decision to suspend the yatra from the traditional route was taken at a meeting of the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board, which oversees all arrangements, in a meeting chaired by the Governor NN Vohra, who is the chairman of the board.
Board chief executive officer SK Gupta, who trekked the area, said in the report that the track on the Pahalgam route had not been cleared. It was decided that yatris, who had got registered for this route from June 28 to June 30, would be allowed to take the Baltal route if they wanted to.
The trek from Baltal to the Amarnath cave shrine is 14 km and is suggested for the physically fit, while the Pahalgam-Sheshnag-Amarnath cave shrine is about 30 km. The traditional Charri Mubarak is taken through this traditional route.
Meanwhile, the governor has directed for early clearance of snow.
The governor along with the CEO surveyed the route on Wednesday. Though there has not been any announcement about the date for starting the yatra from Pahalgam, it may start in the first week of July.
