Tension prevailed in Mission Compound area after the body of an army man “bearing injury marks” was found hanging from the shutter of one of the shops on Thursday morning.
The incident came to light when the owner of the establishment came to open his shop in the morning.
The victim has been identified by police as Ponappa MS, 24, from Karnataka, who was posted as a Lance Naik at Corps of Signals.
While the cops are suspecting it a case of suicide, no suicide note was recovered from the victim.
However, police have started inquest proceedings into the case after registering a case under section 174 (police to inquire and report on suicide, etc) of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC).
The body will be sent for a post-mortem on Friday.
Station house officer (SHO) of the Civil Lines police station inspector Sukhwinder Singh Randhawa said the preliminary investigation revealed that the victim was under stress as he was unable to get married.
“However, the matter is being thoroughly investigated, as no suicide note was recovered from the victim, whose body bore injury marks. The post-mortem will be conducted on Friday,” he said.
Meanwhile, the army authorities, too, have marked an inquiry into the case. Army public relation officer (PRO) Naresh Vig said the victim was posted in Jammu and Kashmir and had come to join duty at Amritsar after being transferred here. “His body bears injury marks. The army has initiated a probe into the matter,” he added.
