After years of wait, residents of the holy city and nearby areas will get to fly to state capital Chandigarh as flights between the two destinations would start from July 23.
Air Mantra airline would operate a 17-seater Beechcraft 1900D aircraft between the two cities on twice-a-day basis. The sale of tickets has already started.
The air connectivity is viewed as major boost to domestic connectivity from Amritsar. A couple of days ago, only domestic career Spicejet had started operations and made air connections to New Delhi and Srinagar operational.
Talking to HT, Sree Guru Ramdas airport director Suneel Dutt said, "This is a much-awaited flight as there was no connection with the state capital. We expect a good response to the endeavour."
He said that the flight would take off from Amritsar at 7:20am and reach Chandigarh at 8:10am. Thereafter, this flight will take off from Chandigarh at 8:50am and reach Amritsar at 9:40am.
In the evenings, the aircraft would take off from Amritsar at 6:00pm and reach Chandigarh at 6:50pm. From Chandigarh, it would take off at 7:30pm and reach Amritsar at 8:20pm."
"Since Amritsar is a tourist place and Chandigarh also has key offices, we are expecting a good response from passengers," added the airport director.
He said that they were also pushing for some more domestic connections.
When contacted, chief operating officer of Air mantra, Pankaj Chopra, said, "Both are key destinations and that was the reason we decided to start operations. Despite being a prosperous state, Punjab lacks domestic connectivity, and our aim is to give options to people."
