Taking time out of their main task of issuing of challans, the Amritsar traffic police have taken up a novel drive to clean the statues of freedom fighters installed in various parts of the city.Stating that the drive is part of the ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan’, additional deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Dhruman Nimblay, who led the campaign launched on Sunday, said, “As the cleanliness campaign was launched recently, we (traffic police) decided to contribute by cleaning statues of the freedom fighters”. This will be a weekly affair and the statues will be cleaned every Sunday.

ADCP Nimblay, who kicked of the campaign by cleaning the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in the Ram Bagh Gardens, said, “I think this is one area that needs attention. We have so far identified seven statues in the city and will make sure these are cleaned.

He said, “This is an initiative of the traffic wing and the entire team is motivated to do the job. The freedom fighters contributed so much to the nation and it is our duty to show such respect”.
