2 men snatch gun from Amritsar cop

In an incident that left the Amritsar police in panic, two unidentified men ran away after snatching a self-loading rifle (SLR) and 10 cartridges from a naka outside the busy Hall Gate Chowk.

Though the police that had intensified the checking is yet to recover the rifle and cartridges, they have suspended two policemen deployed on the naka.

The police have registered a case against the two unidentified men on the complaint of constable Simranjit Singh.

In his complaint, constable Simranjit Singh said, "I was on naka duty along with head constables Tarsem Singh and Gurdeep Singh at Hall Gate. Tarsem went for dinner and Gurdeep went to the toilet. As I was standing alone at the naka, two unidentified men arrived there and asked directions for Rani Ka Bagh area. As I was telling them the way, one of them pushed me and ran away after snatching the SLR and 10 cartridges."

Talking to HT, police commissioner Ram Singh said, "We have got some important clue and efforts are on to nab the accused. Various police teams have been formed to trace the accused."

It is also learnt that police parties are raiding adjoining areas, including Tarn Taran district.

Ram Singh said they had already suspended head constables Tarsem Singh and Gurdeep Singh for negligence in duty.

According to the complainant policeman, the two accused sported beard and had wrapped cloth on their face.

The police have got made sketches of the two suspects and are likely to put them at key locations.

The incident took place at the busy Hall Gate where at 10.30pm a lot of people are present.

Murder of head constable not yet traced
The city police are yet to trace the case in which a head constable of the Amritsar (rural) police was murdered a few months back in the area falling under the Sultanwind olice station.

Head constable Gurdeep Singh was murdered by unidentified persons in October last year. He had been shot in the back.
