A local court on Friday sentenced 26 accused to life imprisonment in a murder case and another to three years of imprisonment.

The sentence was pronounced by additional district and sessions judge PP Singh. The court acquitted 12 other people against whom a case under section 325 of the IPC had been registered.

The case against the 27 was registered following the murder of two brothers during an armed clash with another group at Dhariwal village under Lopoke police station of Amritsar Rural police district. The judge held 26 of them guilty under section 302 of the IPC while another who was found guilty of assisting the murderers was sentenced to three years' imprisonment.

The court, however, acquitted 12 members of the rival party against whom a case under section 325 of the IPC had been registered at Lopoke police station. The police had registered the cross case on the complaint of the other party and they were charged with armed assault. However, the court found no evidence of armed assault against them.

The clash between the two groups took place on July 10, 2010 following a dispute over a piece of agricultural land in the village. Brothers Kewal Singh and Saroop Singh, who were relatives of those who were acquitted, were killed in the clash.

All those sentenced to life imprisonment are inter-related.
